During their normal service this morning, our pool vendor reported that something set off the earthquake auto-shutoff valves for all three pools over the weekend. This means that the heaters for these pools were not receiving gas and basically turned off when the shut-off valve was activated. Due to its size, the main pool wasn’t really impacted, but the east and west pools did cool off quite a bit. We are not sure what exactly set off the shut-off valves as there didn’t seem to be any (sizeable) earthquakes over the weekend. There’s a chance it could have been someone tampering with the device, but since all three activated around the same time, it was likely some small seismic activity they all picked up.
Here is a status update for each pool:
West
Our pool vendor has restored the gas at the west pool and everything there is working properly. It should be back up to its normal temp by late afternoon today.
East
The earthquake gas shut-off valve broke when it was activated and needs to be replaced (it was very old). The gas heater will not work until this shut-off valve is replaced. The vendor is working on getting the part today and the current plan is to replace it early tomorrow. Right now the pool temp is around 73 degrees. Today’s hot weather should help it maintain that temperature. Once repaired, the pool will heat up about 1 degree per hour. If repaired tomorrow morning, the temp should be back into the low 80s by the early evening.
Main
We were able to restore gas service to the main pool heaters, but one of our two heaters didn’t turn back on. The vendor is troubleshooting and if any work or repairs need to be done, it will be covered under warranty. The good news is since we have two heaters and the main pool is so large, we shouldn’t really see any change in water temperature so long as it stays warm outside this week.
If there are any delays, we’ll send out another eSignal!
